From director Todd Stephens (EDGE OF SEVENTEEN), comes what
is surely the first ever Goth road trip movie, GYPSY 83.
Although the film takes place in Sandusky, Ohio in 2001,
you’d think it was 1983 after having a look at the
film’s two lead characters. Gypsy Vale is an overweight,
25 year-old, woman who works at a photo mat while dreaming
of rock n’ roll fame and obsessing about her idol,
Stevie Nicks, who, says Gypsy, is the godmother of Goth.
Her best friend, a 17-year-old Goth named Clive, is a Robert
Smith (lead singer of The Cure) wannabe, who is just beginning
to express his homosexuality. The two spend their free time
in a cemetery where they dream of escaping the rigid and
narrow confines of Ohio. One day they hear about a special
Goth club event in New York City called “A Night of
a Thousand Stevies,” a tribute to Gypsy’s heroine.
The two hit the road where they encounter a host of unique
characters including a washed up lounge singer played by
the infamous Karen Black, a sexy Amish boy on the run, and
hostile frat boys. GYPSY 83 is a valentine to the Goth subculture
and a reassuring tribute to anyone who has felt left out.
The film features a great 80s soundtrack with music from
Siouxsie and the Banshees, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The
Cure.
