SUDDENLY is the feature debut for 26-year-old Diego Lerman.
Already winning awards and recognition internationally,
SUDDENLY,
is an enchanting and mesmerizing cinema experience that is
even more powerful for its black and white cinematography.
Lerman creates enchantingly leftfield characters that have
attracted apt comparisons with Jim Jarmusch’s early work.
Punk girl-hoods Mao (Carla Crespo) and Lenin (Veronica Hassan)
are restless and bored when they spot full figured lingerie
salesgirl Marcia (Tatiana Saphir) on the streets of Buenos
Aires, Argentina. Mao decides that she wants to sleep with
this straight girl, and along with Lenin, decide to “kidnap” her.
Stealing a taxi, and taking the not-resisting-all-that-much
victim on a road trip through the Argentine wilderness, the
dyke duo sees their relationships shift as they call in on
Lenin’s aged aunt (who happens to be one of the most divine
characters in recent cinema). This film is like taking an
emotional roller-coaster ride, where one moment you are taken
aback and horrified, and the next you are laughing at how
ridiculous Mao and Lenin’s shared tough girl stance is. Finally,
the vulnerability and tenderness that lie just below the
surface touches us. SUDDENLY will steal your heart.
